The Invasion and the War in Belgium From Liege to the Yser. With a Sketch of the Diplomatic Negotiations Preceding the Conflict by Leon van der Essen. The author was a professor of history at the University of Louvain and during the First World War he spent time at the University of Oxford, King's College, London, and the University of Chicago in 1914–1916, lecturing on Belgian history with a propaganda brief from the Belgian government in exile in Le Havre. He enlisted in 1916, but was seconded to the foreign ministry's propaganda service. (A calling card from his time in Oxford is loosely inserted) This book is an attempt to document as comprehensively as possible the invasion of Belgium up to the Battle of the Yser with a section on atrocities committed by the German army against Belgians.
